Planning for Change

I was recently asked to speak to business leaders about planning for change - in particular, relating to sustainability.  What a great thought! Planning for change! Environmental sustainability is a big thing right now (finally) however, rather than ad-hoc and reactionary initiatives, shouldn't we be thinking holistically and long-term?  After all, that is what 'sustainable' means - continuing long-term.

Planning for change means taking stock (understanding where you are), consultation with all stakeholders (to establish where you want to be) and then spending time generating ideas (big and small) to achieve the goals you set.

It is a thoughtful, considered and more time-consuming process than simply dictating changes from on high.   However, planning for change in this way will ensure buy-in from stakeholders and give the changes decided upon a much greater chance of success.

A wonderful resource for those wishing to embark on a change journey is Gary Langenwalter's 'The Squeeze: A novel approach to sustainability'.  This very readable book will give tips on how to start making plans and engaging with stakeholders.  So get to it!
